Japanese guitar maker Ibanez has introduced an extended range of guitars and a new bass line under the concept of Tanren—refinement through process.

Ibanez has revealed its 2026 product range, introducing two new series alongside fresh colours and models across its existing catalogue. The release centres on the concept of “Tanren”—a Japanese term encompassing forging, tempering, and the refinement that comes through dedicated process.

Alpha series: ergonomic extended-range guitars

True to its name, signifying a beginning, the Alpha series targets modern players exploring extended-range capabilities. Available in 7 and 8-string multiscale configurations, the series caters to technically advanced guitarists pushing boundaries with evolving tuning concepts and new forms of musical expression.

The Alpha’s body employs a three-dimensional structure developed through extensive ergonomic analysis, featuring elbow and back contours designed to support precise performance. An innovative three-screw neck joint utilises two screws mounted within an oval-shaped stainless-steel plate, plus one additional screw driven directly from the body into the neck. This construction maintains joint strength whilst improving access to the upper frets.

The flagship A527 model features a Parallel Wizard AS 5-piece maple/walnut neck with 24 jumbo stainless steel frets on an ebony fretboard. Fishman Fluence Modern Humbucker pickups—Alnico in the neck position, ceramic at the bridge—deliver active voicing across the 7-string’s extended range, whilst Gotoh MG-T locking machine heads ensure tuning stability.

Mode series: contemporary bass fundamentals

The Mode series reimagines iconic bass design with modern features for today’s players. All models feature a modified body shape providing balance and smooth access to all 24 frets, complemented by a Super All Access neck joint with highly contoured ergonomics.

Roasted maple necks with medium stainless steel frets offer stability and playing comfort, whilst new Ibanez Delta pickups deliver aggressive yet balanced single-coil tone with hum-cancelling design. The Sonitech S preamp provides comprehensive tonal control including 3-band EQ, bypass switch, 3-way mid-frequency switch, and a 2-way Hexa mid system offering six selectable mid-frequency points.

Available configurations span 4, 5, and 6-string models across three series levels, from the poplar burl-topped MDM1600 through to the versatile MDM1000 with transparent pickguard.

Australis Music Group has collaborated with internationally renowned guitarist Ichika Nito on a release video showcasing the 2026 range, featuring Jake Howsam Lowe (Plini) on guitar, Simon Neil Grove (Plini) on bass, Nic Pettersen (Northlane) on drums, and composer/session player Mitch Clews on guitar.

The pairing of Ichika Nito’s expressive playing style with this collection of Australian talent suggests Ibanez is positioning the 2026 range toward players who prioritise technical versatility and dynamic expression across genres.
