John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Imagine film is returning to theatres

The film, directed and produced by Ono and Lennon, documents the recording of the 1971 record of the same name across New York and the U.K.

The film’s original cut featured surrealistic and cinema vérité footage, with visual accompaniments for every track from the album and guest stars including Andy Warhol, Fred Astaire, Jonas Mekas, Dick Cavett, and Imagine producer Phil Spector. The new bonus footage shows previously unreleased studio clips of Lennon performing with a dizzying array of friends including George Harrison, the Rolling Stones’ Nicky Hopkins, Klaus Voormann, and Alan White from Yes.

The release, organised by Ono, was restored digitally frame by frame with enveloping Dolby Atmos sound. Imagine John Yoko, a new 320-page book, is also slated for release by Ono on October 9, spanning the album’s creation with nearly 80 percent of its photographs previously unpublished.

Watch Lennon rehearse the anti-Mcartney diatribe ‘How Do You Sleep?’ below.

Imagine will screen at select Event Cinemas in Sydney and Brisbane on September 17. Keep an eye on this site to see if it will screen near you.
