HAIM – Women In Music Pt. III
For their first full-length full release since 2017’s Something To Tell You, HAIM have delivered an absolute doozy. Women In Music Pt. III might be the Californian sisters’ best work to date, with their trademark vocal harmonies and ‘70s radio rock inspired sound being beefed up by some of the smartest pop songwriting we’ve heard all year. Songs like ‘I Know Alone’, ‘Don’t Wanna’ and ’The Steps’ are sun-soaked So-Cal gems, with each track also being graced with a warm production quality that makes it all the more palatable. Danielle, Este and Alana are definitely in their element here.
Khruangbin – Mordechai
While their music may be chill as hell, there’s no disputing that Khruangbin are one of the hardest working bands going right now. Off the back of releasing their Texas Sun EP with Leon Bridges in February, the Houston psych-funk trio have dropped their latest joint Mordechai, seeing them take their sound to unprecedentedly groovy new levels. Several Khruangbin songs have featured vocals in the past, but on Mordechai, there’s vocals galore, with bassist Laura Lee stepping up to the mic on ‘Time (You And I)’ and ‘So We Won’t Forget’ to make for a memorable venture for the ever-consistent band. A certified chill out album for late nights or early mornings.
Flume, Toro y Moi – The Difference Remix EP
Released earlier in the year, ‘The Difference’ saw Flume link up with chill-wave OG Toro y Moi for ‘The Difference’ an addictive, all-too-short drum ’n bass fuelled cut that deserved much more attention than it got at the time. We’re hoping that this newly released remix EP of the single helps draw more attention to the genius of the original, featuring reimagined versions from the likes of Jon Hopkins, Willaris. K, High Contrast and Picard Brothers. Hopkins version is by far one of the best remixes to drop so far this year, while Willaris. K takes the track on a rave-ready odyssey on his two remixes included on the pack. Essential listening for any avid producer.
Grey Daze (feat. Chester Bennington) – Amends
Prior to joining Linkin Park, the late Chester Bennington developed his distinctive vocals in the post-grunge band Grey Daze, recording a gamut of material with the group before leaving the band in 1998. Now, Grey Daze are sharing a shelved album featuring Bennington’s remastered vocal takes from those sessions in the form of Amends, with some of the music also being written by Bennington too. It might seem like a bit naff on first inspection, but there’s a lot of conviction in the performances on Amends, and at the end of the day, it’s an interesting listen for any Linkin Park diehard.
Bananagun – True Story Of Banangun
Formerly a solo project for frontman Nick van Bakel, Melbourne psych-rockers Bananagun have stepped out and affirmed why they’re one of the country’s coolest new bands with their debut True Story Of Banangun. Drawing on elements of ‘70s psychedelia and channeling Afrobeat and Highlife rhythms, True Story Of Banangun oozes swagger and charm, with the group locking in to deliver a sublimely dancey effort that only gets better as it goes on. Definitely a band to keep your eyes on.
