Elvis Presley's much lauded 1968 comeback special is getting the 50th anniversary treatment it deserves with a box set of five CDs and two BluRay discs.
The box set, slated for a November 30 release, is the most comprehensive chronicling of Presley's famed three-hour TV special ever attempted. Its five disc, two BluRay coverage includes all of the existing audio and video from the show, the original album, both "sit-down" and "stand-up" performances, rehearsals and sessions recorded with the Wrecking Crew in June 1968, including outtakes. As a King completist, it'd be hard to ignore.
The '68 Comeback Special has grown to become a significant moment in Elvis' career, countering the singer's '60s output and Hollywood films by spotlighting a mix of Presley's early work, new songs and some raw iterations of his rock n' roll work with guitarist Scotty Moore and drummer D.J. Fontana. Both musicians are known for playing on the Sun and RCA sessions which brought Presley to prominence in the mid '50s.
The special gave Presley a new lease on life, launching his surprising Memphis Records in 1969 and reviving his reputation prior in the 1970s.
The ’68 Comeback Special (50th Anniversary Edition) is set for release on Friday November 30.
