Here’s one for those of you who are fans of the listening chair and have your own space set aside at home for simply listening to a favourite record. What you don’t need is any of the bells and whistles that a DJ-inspired turntable would normally offer. In fact, you don’t really want a direct drive turntable at all, and would be much better suited with a stable belt-driven unit that delivers even and consistent playback. If you want all this without blowing your entire budget on the hardware, then the Audio-Technica AT-LP3 is certainly worth a listen.

It’s been a long time since the reign of the 1200 ruled over turntable use and the choice was pretty much stitched up before you even thought about which turntable you should buy as a DJ. Nowadays, there are plenty of options, especially with the recent resurgence in vinyl, so it can be a little harder to find the turntable that is right for your needs. But with all the budget options out there, it is good to know that good quality, direct drive turntables are still being built by brands like Denon, specifically designed from the ground up for DJ use.

REVIEWED: NUMARK TT250USB TURNTABLE
There have been plenty of new developments in turntable design in the last 30 years, but it seems that many of us are unable to pull ourselves away from the design models that came to fame in the 1970s. Like many other turntable manufacturers, Numark understands that, so their TT250USB turntable bears a remarkable resemblance to another famous design, but it does carry a few modifications that are what makes it the clever DJ tool that it is.
Audio-Technica AT-LP60BK-BT Bluetooth Turntable
With the recent vinyl revival that seems to be going from strength to strength, there are a range of new turntable options appearing on the market that will appeal to a wider listening audience. One such device is the AT-LP60BK-BT, which, although it may be a bit of a mouthful in the product code department, is a relatively simple unit that is going to fit the bill for a wider group of music enthusiasts, especially as it offers Bluetooth transmission for wireless playback.
Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB Direct Drive Turntable
It was just this week that I discovered issues with one of my old turntables and was considering looking at some new options. Then a box arrived containing perhaps the answer to my wishes. The Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB is a bit of a mouthful when it comes to model numbers, but it makes up for all that in features. For any of you wanting to digitise your vinyl collection and get those classic records into your digital playlist, this is an ideal solution that still has a traditional operation too.
Denon MCX8000 DJ Player
Denon have long been associated with Hi-Fi, electronics and digital audio technology. This includes record players, cassette decks and everything else along the way. The advent of PCs, software and digital media for DJing has also seen Denon keep up the pace. With many competitors in the market, the development of the MCX8000 seems like the logical next step in DJ control.
Audio-Technica AT-LP5 Direct Drive Turntable
There have been plenty of turntables released for DJ use in the last twenty years from a range of manufacturers, and Audio-Technica is certainly one such company. However, their heritage in turntables goes way back before the bedroom DJ needed a pair of decks. They have been manufacturing turntables since the 60s, and understand hi-fi enthusiasts’ needs for a direct drive turntable. So, don’t go thinking this is a trick deck that will rock the house and scratch the night away. No, this is a more sophisticated unit, designed for one purpose, the enjoyment of listening to music in its purest recorded form.
