Supreme link up with Akai for limited edition MPC Live II

Words by Will Brewster

You can't beat it.

The Akai MPC is an instrument that’s synonymous with hip-hop culture. The preferred production tool of legends like Dr. Dre, J Dilla, DJ Premier and Kanye West, its influence upon the evolution of the genre as we know simply cannot be understated – and now, that legacy is being commemorated by none other than Supreme.

Keep up to date with all the latest music gear news here.

As part of the cult New York streetwear brand’s spring/summer 2021 collection, a special edition of the Akai MPC Live II, the latest instrument in the fabled family of samplers, is set to be launched tomorrow.

While the innards of the beat machine remain identical to the regular edition released by Akai last year, the exterior of the special edition MPC Live II is wrapped with Supreme’s distinctive red finish, with the brand’s slogan sitting beneath the sample pads and touchscreen interface.

Considering Supreme’s own long-standing affiliation with hip-hop culture, the collaboration between the two parties really comes as a no-brainer, and should serve as the perfect grail for any brand savvy beatmaker out there.

Last year, Supreme grabbed headlines with the revelation that they’d teamed up with Shure for a limited edition version of the humble SM58 microphone.

Previously, the brand has also collaborated with Fender on a Supreme Stratocaster for their 2017 season, and teamed up with Pearl for a flashy limited edition drum kit back in 2019.
