Freitas’ collection is estimated to be around five million, and last year it emerged that he was most likely the world’s most active collector and in possession of one of the greatest collections.
When it became apparent that Freitas held this title, there was some uncertainty surrounding the intended use of the collection, but in an interview with BBC News, Freitas has recently explained that he intends for his records to be catalogued in order to make a searchable and listenable collection.
“We hope people will be able to select records through our collection and listen to the music,” says Freitas. “The relationship people have with certain songs is subjective and personal. I want to share this with people and make it possible for them to recall their memories.”
Freitas explained that may of his records were purchased abroad, and then brought to Brazil in large shipping containers where they were cleaned, catalogued and filed away.
