A celebration of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis is being livestreamed on Tuesday

Described as “a special evening of music, poetry and conversation,” Moving Through the Silence: Celebrating The Life and Legacy of Ian Curtis is scheduled to go live at 5am AEDT on Tuesday May 18. The event will be raising funds for various mental health and music charities around Joy Division’s birthplace of Manchester, including mental health charity Manchester Mind, Nordoff Robins music therapy centre and the Mayor of Greater Manchester’s Charity. The event will also coincide with the start of Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK.

Taking place on the 40th anniversary of Curtis’ passing, Moving Through The Silence will be hosted music writer / DJ Dave Haslam, and will feature guest appearances by fellow Joy Division members Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris and The Killers’ Brandon Flowers. An array of musical acts will also be broadcast, including performances from Kodaline, Elbow, Oliver Lomax, LoneLady and Royal Northern College of Music’s Northern Session Choir.

Joy Division bassist Peter Hook has also announced his own event to commemorate his late bandmate: a concert film of his group Peter Hook and the Light covering the entirety of Joy Division’s back catalogue. It’ll go live on Tuesday via Hook’s YouTube channel, with viewers being encouraged to donate to the Epilepsy Society to honour Curtis’ memory.

Just yesterday, a vinyl reissue of Joy Division’s second full-length effort Closer was announced to commemorate its own 40th anniversary. It’s set for release on Friday July 17, and will also include new remastered versions of singles like ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’, ‘Atmosphere’ and ‘Transmission’. You can preorder it here
