An encyclopedia of alternate guitar tunings has been found on a vintage web page

First published way back in 1997, Warren Allen’s Encyclopedia of Alternate Tunings offers a little gateway to the world of guitar on the internet, a full year before the creation of UltimateGuitar.com and in the midst of an era where print magazines reigned supreme.

While the webpage presents some fairly primitive late ’90s internet aesthetics – we’re a big fan of the awful formmating and huge chunks of blue text – it does contain an absolute jackpot of resources for alternate tunings, covering everything from Keith Richards’ and Robert Johnson’s bluesey open tunings to the mind-bending experimental tunings favoured by the likes of Robert Fripp and Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore. Even with all the resources available at the tips of our fingers today, there’s no denying the value of this extremely cool gateway into the past.
