Ernie Ball Music Man unveil new Joe Dart signature basses

Words by Will Brewster

Expanding on the Vulfpeck bassist's stripped-back signature model from 2019.

Following the immense reception to the initial limited release back in 2019, Ernie Ball Music Man have once again teamed up with Joe Dart to release two new basses as part of the Joe Dart Signature collection.

Best known for his funky, ultra-precise playing with nu-funk ensemble Vulfpeck, Joe Dart is an undisputed titan of modern bass playing. His approach to groove and technique demonstrates serious commitment and finesse, and to see him be celebrated by a company of Ernie Ball Music Man’s ilk is nothing short of tremendous.

The new signature line, which consists of the Joe Dart Artist Series Signature Bass and the limited edition Joe Dart Jr. short-scale, takes inspiration from Ernie Ball’s classic StingRay build, with a distinctive ‘less is more’ design ethos being applied to each instrument.

Best suited for players who are seeking a stripped-back, simplified sound, the Joe Dart Artist Series Signature Bass combines a lightweight figured ash body with a deluxe flame maple neck and figured maple fingerboard with 22 frets, producing a snappy tone to help you slice through the mix.

A single custom-wound passive Sterling bass pickup sits in the bridge position of the instrument, while a lone oversized control knob allows for simple volume adjustments, leaving the rest of the tone-shaping up to the discretion and technique of the player.

Other features include a vintage Music Man top-loaded steel bridge with nickel plated saddles, as well as Schaller tuners and a custom five-bolt neck join adorned with Dart’s signature, and is shipped with flat-wound strings for a classic vintage funk tone.

The Joe Dart Artist Series Signature is also available in two finishes, with Ernie Ball offering both Velvet Natural and Black Velvet colour-ways.

Also new to the Joe Dart Artist Series Signature collection is the Joe Dart Jr., a short-scale take on the Vulfpeck bassist’s regular signature model that’s limited to only 50 units worldwide.

Packing a custom-contoured body and a 30″ scale length, the Joe Dart Jr. is perfect for smaller players looking to dabble in funky styles or bassists who prefer the feel and tone of short-scale instruments.

The bass features a lightweight ash body and a select maple neck and maple fretboard with 22 frets, as well as a single neodymium humbucker in the bridge. However, unlike its older sibling, the Joe Dart Jr. does away with the single volume control, making it about as barebones as a bass can get – and all for the better.

Other features include an Opaque White finish and custom three-ply gold pickguard, with the bass also coming with a black Mono ‘Vertigo’ gig bag, marking the first ever collaboration between the two musical equipment manufacturers.
