As reported on Pitchfork, Yoko put the project together an homage to her late husband’s political interests, and in order to celebrate what would have been his 75th birthday. Yoko organised the giant human peace sign in New York’s famous Central Park.
Originally, the aim was to beat the Guinness World Record of 5,000 people crafting a peace sign with their bodies. Though they fell short of this goal, the event succeeded in both celebrating the life of the icon and raising awareness for The John Lennon Educational Bus Tour, a non-for-profit organisation that gives students the resources needed to make music.
The demonstration was in many ways a manifestation of the lyricism found in Lennon’s ‘Imagine’, a fitting tribute that saw 2,000 people ‘living life in peace’. Since John Lennon’s assassination in 1980, Yoko has taken it upon herself to continue her and her husband’s peace campaigns, most recently protesting against hydraulic fracturing alongside Lady Gaga and Alec Baldwin.
