YAMAHA UNVEIL NEW MODELS AT SUMMER NAMM

New Acoustic, Bass and Electric Guitars From Yamaha

At the 2017 Summer NAMM Yamaha Corporation of America revealed a whole host of new guitar models including three new LJ Acoustic Models, nine new BB series basses and a re-imagined Pacifica electric guitar.

Yamaha have expanded their LJ Acoustic range adding three new models, the LJ6R, LJ16R and the LJ16BC. The clear standout from the host of new models is the LJ16BC, a special edition guitar designed in conjunction with Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins. Corgan’s signature guitar is based off the standard LJ16R model, with a TUSQ nut and saddle, Gotoh vintage style tuners, brass bridge pins and no pickguard. It also features Corgan's zero logo on the headstock and signature on the label.

The LJ6R and LJ16R both feature solid Engelmann spruce tops, treated with A.R.E (Acoustic Resonance Enhancement), a wood reforming technology designed by Yamaha. The back and sides of the guitars will be produced with rosewood, the LJ16R features solid wood and the LJ6R laminate. Other highlights of the standard run models include maple body binding, an ebony fretboard and bridge, a thinner neck profile, lower string action and under-saddle passive pickups for live performances.

Yamaha also introduced nine new models to their BB series basses. The new models will have smaller bodies than the original BB series models, and also feature subtle contour changes and body weight reduction, for better playability.

The new models feature an Alder/Maple/Alder construction and a more stable six-bolt mitre neck joint that has already won praise in the Billy Sheehan signature/Attitude Limited III. The new basses will for the first time in the BB series contain standard sized pickups allowing for easier customisation or replacement.

Rounding out the upgrades is the Pacifica 611VFMX; a reimagining of the Pacifica line of electric guitars. The key feature of the 611VFMX is the unconventional pairing of Seymour Duncan pickups. At the neck is an SP90-2N pickup (an update of the SP90-1N) which combines an extra coil winding with two ceramic bar magnets, this is matched with a Custom 5 humbucking bridge pickup. Other features of the Pacifica 611VFMX include a Wilkinson V550 tremolo bridge, locking Grover tuning machines, Graphtech nut and Graphtech string retainer.
