Squier revive the Starcaster at Summer NAMM 2019

Overlooked by many a guitarist upon being first released in 1976 due to Gibson’s dominance over the hollowbody market, the Starcaster was later adopted as a budget vintage instrument by several influential alt-rock guitarists including Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, The Killers’ Dave Keuning and Josh Klinghoffer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. While the guitar was reissued by Fender’s Mexican production plant in 2013, it’s only now that Squier have taken the offset design into their own hands.

For those seeking unqiue looks and a sharp, distinctive tone without spending too many pennies, Squier are offering three different versions of the Starcaster with the Classic Vibe, Contemporary Active and Affinity Series. The Classic Vibe model features Fender-designed Wide Range humbuckers, as well as a period correct headstock and neck tint, and comes in Sunburst, Natural and a crisp Walnut finish. For purists, this is the one you’ll want to nab.

If you’re looking for something a bit more modern, the Contemporary Active Starcaster will be right up your alley, with dual high-output active humbuckers and a sealed semi-hollow design to reduce feedback. This one’s available in Satin Black, Surf Pearl and Ice Blue Metallic colours.

On a budget? Suss out the Affinity model, which features Squier humbuckers, two control knobs and an easy-to-navigate satin neck, and comes in an array of finishes including Black, Sunburst, Olympic White and Candy Apple Red. Tasty – we can’t wait to get our mitts on some of these in the office when they land.
