Spike Lee announced to direct film adaptation of David Byrne’s American Utopia

American Utopia, which was initially released as a solo album back in 2018, was transitioned into a Broadway show last October, and has since received critical acclaim and broken a number of attendance records. The film adaptation is set to be filmed in conjunction with production company Participant is expected to be released sometime later this year.

Byrne celebrated the news in a press statement circulated today, saying “Pinch me. This couldn’t have worked out better for this project. Spike Lee directing and Participant producing — two socially engaged teams, well, three if you count us in the band, coming together in what I feel will be something moving, important, and unlike anything anyone has seen before.”
