Show & Tell: Craig Selak from The Bennies

Show & Tell is where we get artists to tell us about a piece of gear that they cherish and use as a part of their live or studio setup. This month we chat to Craig Selak, bassist for The Bennies.

What piece of equipment do you have to show us today?

Today I have my Little Mark III bass head from Markbass.

How did you come across this particular item?

When our band The Bennies first started, I was playing any amp I could find at a show. One day, I borrowed the same amp as this and was so blown away by it I went and bought one the next day. It’s all I’ve played through since.

What is it that you like about it so much?

I used to find with a lot of bass heads that the bottom end would ‘fart out’ at high volumes, but with my LMIII it always stays light and tight, especially when I crank her right up. I also find that no matter whether we are playing a big festival or the Old Bar, my LMIII always sounds the same. I have toured all over the world with this amp, and its consistency has constantly got me stoked over and over again.

How do you use it and how has it shaped the way you write music?

I like to mix it up a fair bit in terms of settings, especially because in our band we play a lot of different genres, often flipping between reggae, rock, psychedelic, and disco within the same song. The LMIII has an awesome way of letting me mix up my settings whilst still keeping a really clean and clear constant feel. It also loves pedals, and one of my favourite moments in the set is during our song ‘Party Machine’ where I slam a volume boost and an octave fuzz on to get a cheap techno tone - the LMIII really makes it pump.

Tell us a little about what you have coming up.

We have a new album called Natural Born Chillers coming out on February 2 which I recorded with this amp. We also have about a million tour dates in the works, so myself and my Markbass will be melting a face near you soon.

Natural Born Chillers is out Friday February 2 through Pool House Records/Remote Control.
