Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Run The Jewels + more: Five new albums to listen to this weekend

A week's roundup of hot releases

Friday has finally arrived, which means it's release day for a bunch of albums at home and around the world. With so many hot releases out there, we've compiled some of the best new albums to present to you for the long weekend of listening. Featuring an album of the year contender from US rap heavyweights Run The Jewels, the unlikely return of The Ghost Inside and more, here's some of our favourite releases from this week in June.

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - Sideways To New Italy (Ivy League Records)

The second full-length from Melbourne's current champions of jangle rock has finally arrived. Inspired by life on the road and returning to normality, Sideways To New Italy sees Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever double down on the sonic formula they introduced to the world with 2018's Hope Downs - the guitars are more vivacious, the lyrics curious and endearing, the songwriting chemistry tighter than ever before. Tracks like 'Cars In Space' and 'She's There' hint that RBCF are only getting better and better, and seems to confirm their status as one of Melbourne's hottest groups going.

Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels 4 (Jewel Runners + BMG)

This one couldn't have come at any better time. Amid chaotic civil rights protests in the United States and all over the world, Run The Jewels have shared their highly anticipated fourth record, a supercharged effort from one of hip-hop's finest duos. Released days ahead of schedule (and without a price-tag) to give listeners "something raw to listen to while you deal with it all," RTJ4 sees Killer Mike and El-P at their best, uniting with the likes of Zack de la Rocha, Josh Homme, Mavis Staples, 2 Chainz, Pharrell and DJ Premier for what might just be one of the best rap albums of the year. If you only listen to one album this weekend, make sure it's this one.

Ebonivory - The Long Dream I (Wild Thing Records)

With a rising reputation as one of the most impressive prog-metal acts in Australia, Ballarat boys Ebonivory have shared their latest LP, The Long Dream I. The first chapter of a two-part concept album, The Long Dream I fuses elements of hardcore, atmospheric post-rock and metal for an odyssey unlike any other, with frontman Charlie Powlett delivering some of his best vocal performances yet. It's passionate, transcendental, sweeping and incredibly ambitious - as all good progressive albums should be. Needless to say, we're excited for the follow-up already.

The Ghost Inside - The Ghost Inside (Epitaph Records)

Against all odds, The Ghost Inside have conquered unimaginable adversity to create what is undoubtedly the most powerful release of their career: their self-titled album The Ghost Inside. It's the legendary metalcore group's first album since 2014's Dear Youth and their fatal bus accident in 2015, in which all band members were seriously injured. The band's new album sees the band tap into the raw emotions of these experiences and delivers them in spectacular fashion, demonstrating a cohesiveness and drive unlike another in the industry. By all accounts, The Ghost Inside is a tremendous triumph.

Covet - technicolor (Banquet Records)

Featuring the incredible talents of Yvette Young on guitar, Covet's latest effort technicolor is a lucid release best suited to a darkened room and a good pair of headphones. Across technicolor, the Bay Area math-rockers display their chops without making things too shreddy or hard to count, with tracks like 'Nero' and 'Parachute' (featuring Young's debut vocal performance) being among some of the band's best material ever released. One of the best things about Covet is that they always sound like they're having a lot of fun, and on technicolor, the energy is most definitely contagious.

Honorable Mentions: HindsThe Prettiest Curse, Trickfinger (John Frusciante) - She Smiles Because She Pushes The Button EP, The Angels - Under The Stone EP
