NEUMANN - TLM 102 CARDIOID CONDENSER MIC
Neumann has long been one of the go to microphone brands for studios around the world. Typically making high-end studio quality products, their wares can be heard on anything from the Beatles to Beyonce. Hailing from Berlin, Neumann has produced more than their fair share of classic mics with the U87, U47, KM184 and M149 - although these mics command quite a hefty price. Whilst not a budget mic, the TLM102 isn’t too expensive and comes as an affordable piece of Neumann kit – is it worth it?
SHURE - PGA27 SIDE ADDRESS CONDENSER MICROPHONE
With this new range of PGA microphones from Shure, there's something to suit just about every application, but this was the model that I was most eager to test out. This budget condenser microphone is going to be a go-to microphone for a lot of musicians, as it delivers quality and clarity with an ease of use that makes it a joy to record vocals again.
Sennheiser MK4 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone
There are plenty of options for home recording microphones these days. In fact, there are probably too many options. The budget price range has become awash with these sorts of microphones that offer all sorts of bells and whistles for a low cost, but never really deliver on performance. A number of years back, German microphone stalwarts Sennheiser decided to shake this up a little and deliver a microphone that doesn’t compromise on quality, yet offers those people looking for a cost effective home recording microphone a viable option, introducing the MK4.
SENNHEISER MD 441-U Dynamic Studio Microphone
Sennheiser have produced some classic microphones over the years, and continue to produce them today. Case in point, the MD 441-U dynamic studio microphone is coming up to 50 years since its original release, so I thought it fitting that I give one of these great microphones a good once over. I have never been shy about my love of Sennheiser microphones, and models like the MD 441-U exemplify why I love it when i get my hands on one to test.
SENNHEISER MK8 DUAL DIAPHRAGM CONDENSER MICROPHONE
One thing I love about my work is that I get to use some really great gear well before I often expect to. I was only this morning looking at the Sennheiser website, reading about the new MK8 microphone and thinking about how popular the MK4 was to begin with. Not six hours later and I happened to have an MK8 sitting on my desk ready and waiting for me to test out. For those of you who own or used the popular MK4 microphone from Sennheiser, you’ll be glad to know that this one is a very good follow up. Twice the microphone deserves twice the title.
CAD U37 USB Microphone
As portable recording has become more prevalent, so too have USB Microphones that can plug straight into a computer or tablet for quick recording and broadcasting. Hailing from Ohio, CAD Audio has been making microphones for many years and boast a fair selection of models for a range of applications, so it makes sense they’d have something in the USB realm too. Let’s check out the U37.
