JBL EON208P Portable PA System
I’ve used plenty of PA systems in my time, both portable and very much not, in a wide range of applications. I first used JBL speakers some time last century when the EON range first came on to the scene and lead the way for a new breed of powered, plastic boxes that would change PA systems forever. Over the years we have seen the EON speaker range grow in size and reduce in weight, making them an ideal solution for musicians and DJs who need to transport a system to a venue on a regular basis. With the growth of all-in-one systems, JBL again have delivered the goods time and time again, improving sound quality, increasing volume and decreasing overall weight. That brings us to their newest offering, the EON208P portable PA.
KRK Rokit 4 Monitor Speakers
The Rokit range has been around for long enough now that most of you reading this should have heard one or more of them at some point. We all know them by the bright yellow cones that they employ, having had this look since the first generation some time ago. Now that we’re a couple of years into production of the third generation of Rokits, KRK have added a new model to the line-up, and it is something that really fills a gap and is going to have plenty of interest in the following months. So, let’s take a look at the all new KRK Rokit 4, the new babies in the range of studio monitor speakers.
Leslie SPA-150R-L Ensemble Amplifier
Leslie is a name that is synonymous with organ speakers. Ever since Don Leslie designed his first cabinet with a rotating speaker, it has been a stalwart in blues, jazz and rock organ sounds and continues today as a brand name that delivers nothing but quality and innovation in loudspeaker design. So, it was with great pleasure that I got to test out and hear the new SPA-150R-L Ensemble Speaker from Leslie in recent weeks. As I was trying a Hammond stage piano, it only made sense to hear how it sounds through one of these speakers; the two being a true match made in heaven.
Eve Audio SC203 Desktop Monitors
I love the idea of compact desktop monitors. I have several different pairs around the house in various rooms, as I prefer the sound these offer to any computer shop speaker system designed to run off a Sound Blaster sound card. If you are going to listen to audio from your computer, even if it is just for enjoyment sake and not critical monitoring, then why not treat yourself to a decent set of speakers to get the job done right. That’s where Eve Audio have taken the idea of their new speaker set in the SC203. A master and slave design that sees the amplifiers and controls housed in one cabinet and simply drivers housed in the other. But, the SC203s have a few tricks that are very interesting indeed.
JBL EON615 Active Speaker
It’s a good thing JBL sent me one of these speakers to road test this month, because it makes my job so much simpler. The fact of the mat- ter is that I use one of these almost every day of the week, so I was pretty much across the unit before I even opened the roadcase to dis- cover what was inside. What we are talking about is the JBL EON615, the new standard in the EON range, and the speaker that so many of you will be using in the future when you upgrade your dated powered speakers for a newer, more fexible and more powerful model.
Electro-Voice EKX-12P Loudspeaker and EXK-15SP Subwoofer
The EKX Series is the latest addition to Electro-Voice’s well-regarded PA line. Offering stunning fidelity and massive power in a compact unit, the EKX series is suitable in practically any context, from blasting club bangers to delicate gallery installations to DIY house shows. We were invited to take the EKX-12P and EXK-15SP (a powered 12” loudspeaker and powered 15” subwoofer respectively) for a test drive with the friendly folk at Factory Sound in their lush dedicated speaker-demo room.
BOSE F1 PORTABLE ARRAY SPEAKER SYSTEM
There is a good reason why line array speakers are used for most concerts and festivals these days, and it’s not simply because they look so darn impressive. It’s a matter of delivering the sound to the audience. There is no point having speakers up on a high stage firing right over the heads of half of the crowd. And you can’t blast the front row in the face when a raised setting is in place and expect the people up the back to still hear clearly. The way a line array system angles the speakers to cover the entire audience placement within a space allows everyone to hear more clearly. Bose have brought this principle to their new and exciting portable speaker system, the F1.
ALTO PROFESSIONAL BLACK SERIES POWERED SPEAKERS
I first came across Alto Professional audio products more than a decade ago. What I found back then and what I continue to find to this day is that Alto do indeed deliver a product that meets the needs of those looking for something within a price point, but also a product that carries a mark of quality that sets it above what you would expect for the price. So, when I first got to test drive a couple of speakers form the Black Series of powered PA solutions some months back, I was initially impressed by what I heard, but the range goes further than just a couple of speakers, so this month I had a look at the full power of the Black Series by Alto professional.
