Pillow Queens run us through their seven favourite Australian artists

One of our favourites from this talent pool, however, has got to be Pillow Queens. Armed with all the conviction, charisma and chemistry that should constitute a good group, the femme four-piece’s brand of ragged indie rock has seen them accumulate airplay across the likes of RRR, BBC Radio 1 and Triple J, with their latest single ‘Handsome Wife’ drawing comparisons to trailblazers such as The Jezabels and Middle Kids.

As if their tunes weren’t already tidy enough, it turns out that Pillow Queens have quite an impeccable taste in music with a special soft-spot for Australian music in particular. To get to know Pillow Queens a bit better ahead of their debut album In Waiting arriving next month, we linked up with the emerging Dublin sensations to find out about their favourite songs from Australian artists, from Courtney Barnett and Julia Jacklin to The Cat Empire and beyond.

Julia Jacklin – ‘Don’t Know How To Keep Loving You’

The saddest and most beautiful song that ever existed. Julia Jacklin has soundtracked many a tour for PQs over the years and we absolutely adore her. The Triple J Like A Version session she did was perfect!

Merpire – ‘Heavy Feeling’

Courtney Barnett – ‘Need A Little Time’

We love Courtney. Our manager once played drums with her on an Aussie tour and we’ve been begging him to introduce us ever since. One day we hope to share a stage because she really is one of the greats!

Hachiku – ‘Shark Attack’

Criminally underrated.

Alex The Astronaut – ‘Christmas in July’

The Cat Empire – ‘Fishies’

Perfect soundtrack for road tripping!!! Musically, lyrically great.

The Jezabels – ‘Easy To Love’

Hayley Mary is the sole reason I (Sarah) cut my hair short. So good!

Pillow Queens’ debut album In Waiting arrives this September – preorder it here.
