NAMM 2020: Roland’s Facet Grand Piano opens a portal to the future

Based on the winning design of a competition held by Roland back in 2015, the Facet Grand Piano is certainly a sight to behold. Crafted from ‘crystal-like’ polyhedrons and utilising a distinct floating look, the Facet also features Roland’s latest piano modelling sound engines, speakers and keybeds to create a playing experience unlike any other. It’s also seamlessly intergrated with technology to access digital content and communications via the Android-powered display atop of the piano lid, which in turn allows for future software or firmware updates from the company as well as accessing apps and viewing sheet music.

The Facet Grand Piano also allows for hands-free control via Amazon’s Alexa, while Roland’s Zenbeats production app is built into the system. There’s even a projector that can display pictures and videos onto the top board of the piano as you play, which can be syncopated in time with your music – huge.

Although the Roland Facet Grand Piano isn’t available for purchase just yet, punters can see it in action at the Roland booth at NAMM and at CES 2020 this month. If you’re in attendance, make sure you get down and viddy the future of the keyboard as we know it, and for everyone else, stay tuned to hear more about when these things land in store.
