Melbourne Music Week extends program to span three months

Crankin' up the heat for summer time.

In an effort to aid the recovery of Melbourne's live music sector, Melbourne Music Week has today announced that they've expanded their program to cover the entire period of December 2020 - February 2021.

Initially slated to go down this November, the City of Melbourne will now hold the city-wide Melbourne Music Week Extended event from Wednesday December 9 through to Sunday February 28, acting as a wider celebration of the city's creative sector.

On top of allowing for a larger and more dispersed program, Melbourne Music Week Extended will also help to get Melbourne's creative sector get back on its feet after months of the COVID-19 shutdown, employing stage crew and events staff for a longer period of time and injecting some much-needed cash back into the industry.

This year's special program will also consist entirely of local artists, and will also feature support opportunities for independent venues, local businesses or independent events to get involved.

As expected, Melbourne Music Week Extended will also follow phased COVID-safe guidelines, with the majority of events to be held outdoors and in intimate groups. Depending on the progress of the virus, the event also expects to lead into greater capacity outdoor and some indoor events when possible - fingers crossed.

“Melbourne’s live music scene is renowned internationally and employs thousands of people. We really want Melburnians to get out and support our venues this summer because it’s been an incredibly tough year," City of Melbourne CEO Justin Hanney said in a statement released today.

"I think Melburnians will relish the opportunity to again see live music again. Summer is a crucial time of the year for our live music venues and we want to maximise entertainment across the city.”
