Mixdown’s Top 5 Local Acts To Catch At Good Things Festival

Parkway Drive

Need we say more? The Parkway boys have a proven history for putting on a sick live show and their Good Things performance will undoubtedly live up to their reputation. Going through life without seeing a Parkway set is un-Australian – they’re an integral part of not only the Aussie music scene, but the entire genre of metalcore worldwide. Headlining the festival, Parkway Drive will be closing the show and blessing us with a 1 hour and 15 minute set.

The Veronicas

The Veronicas got a bit of backlash when their names popped up on the Good Things lineup, but these iconic identical twins are truly emo at heart. Growing up idolising bands like The Used and My Chemical Romance, the pair have always been inspired by the punk and metal scene. The Veronicas have also hinted at making their Good Things performance heavier than usual. Since the rest of the acts are rock and metal, they feel as though they have more creative control when it comes to straying away from their mainstream sound. Jess even captioned an Instagram photo regarding the Good Things lineup “You better believe I am turning Untouched screamo for these shows.” Their drummer is none other than Steve Judd from Karnivool (who are also playing at Good Things), so we’re expecting the wall of death is going to be pretty lit.

The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect are back! With their original lineup, the band recently released their first single since 2008. OG fans can rejoice, because this track has a similar vibe to their older catalogue, and fingers crossed they’ve got some more stuff in the works. Having been added to the Good Things lineup last minute, this will be their first festival appearance in a whopping 11 years.

Violent Soho

There is absolutely no denying that Australians love Violent Soho. Heavy music fan or not, this band seems to appeal to literally everyone, so the mosh for this set is sure to be super energetic. The set from the band will be an interesting one – their older catalogue is full of heavy drums, thrashy guitars and a lot of yelling, while their latest single ‘A-OK’ is very mellow and relaxed. Violent Soho’s James Tidswell recently told Mixdown that they’re “busting to play” some of their new material, so it’ll be cool to hear the grungy sounds of their old stuff played alongside some breezy, chill beats.

Gravemind

Not only has their latest release Conduit been making waves in the heavy music scene, this band has proven time and time again to be a great live performance. After recently touring with August Burns Red, Gravemind has since been popping up on tour posters around the country supporting massive names like Northlane and Thy Art is Murder. This set will be worth getting there early for, and supporting smaller bands will always be metal as fuck.
