The most obvious, but definitely not the only, reason to use a short scale bass is its compact size and closer fret spacing. However, professional bassists are well aware of a ‘secret’ to the sound of a short scale bass – shorter strings require less tension to achieve correct tuning. Lower tension means a more flexible feeling string that at the same time gives you a fatter bottom end on low notes, while at the same time lending a smoother sound to the top notes.
