In June next year, Broadway will be set alight be a new Spongebob SquarePants musical, and amongst those signed to produce original music for the show is none other than Bowie himself.

Entertainment Weekly has reported that Bowie will be penning some work along with Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend and They Might Be Giants.

It’s not the first time Bowie and Nickelodian’s favourite underwater cleaning utensil have been aquainted. In the 2007 TV-movie Spongbob’s Atlantis SquarePants Bowie voiced the character of Lord Royal Highness of the lost continent of Atlantis.

The musical is set to debut in Chicago next June before heading to the bright lights of Broadway.

The David Bowie Exhibition is still showing at ACMI in Melbourne. For more information visit www.acmi.net.au/exhibitions/bowie.
