GUITARS BUILT FROM ABANDONED DETROIT HOUSES

edit.jpg

It was only a couple of years ago that Curt found himself rummaging through piles of discarded lumber at Reclaim Detroit, a non-profit organisation that has dismantled over 78,000 abandoned homes and retained materials for reuse.

In a pursuit to find materials to build some furniture, Curt came along something much more interesting. With a knock on a board and a sound that was just right, he knew he had found something “special, not like lumber from the big box stores…it had a ring to it, and also a warm tone”.

Curt’s first instrument was an electric guitar with a semi-hollow body, which gave off a truly unique and beautiful sound – all from the ruins of Detroit.

Woodward Guitar Company was opened in 2014 and is built on the foundation that their one-of-a-kind electric guitars and basses don’t look or sound like any other. With some of the wood used dating back to the early 1900s and others that were sourced after the recent recession in 2013, these guitars sure do have a lot of character.

Each guitar takes between 40-50 hours to hand-craft and features a maple neck, rosewood fretboard and old-school hand-wound pickups. From imperfections and timeless beauty, the hot sellers are accompanied by a picture of the house they originated from as well as a brief history.

Ultimately, customers are drawn to the fact that their guitar is more than just a factory-produced instrument; it’s a piece of history in their hands.
