Budget Cut Threatens Community Radio, Music Industry Respond

The 2016 Federal Budget didn’t make many people happy (except for Malcolm Turnbull’s friends in the top tax bracket), and employees and listeners of community radio stations were among those who weren’t impressed.

This led to the creation of the ‘Keep the Community In Your Radio’ petition, which currently has over 18,000 signatures, and is getting closer to its 20,000 signature goal.

The petition reads: “Community radio serves so many Australians; from radio reading for people with a print disability to programming in the different languages spoken across our country, to Indigenous broadcasters, faith based stations, regional stations and youth stations.”

Community radio stations also give a voice to the smaller, independent artists, and there is a strong link between them and the local music scene. They provide an important alternative to the public and commercial stations that populate the airwaves, and are definitely worth saving.
