Blackstar’s new JJN-20R combo is heaven-in-an-amp for any blues rocker

Fitted with an ECC83 tube in the preamp section and powered by two EL84s, the Blackstar JJN-20R aims to give players a familiar US-voiced tone with a bit of extra juice and twang on tap. It also features a Celestion G12-75 speaker, which should offer a crisp tone with plenty of clarity and volume.

Other than being squeezed into a combo, this new JJN-20R isn’t too dissimilar to Blackstar’s original mini amp stack made for Nichols. There’s two Clean and Bluespower footswitchable channels, as well as digital reverb, an inbuilt attenuator to take the output down to two watts for bedroom rehearsals, USB audio out and even an XLR DI out.

The Blackstar JJN-20R is also finished in a dope racing green tolex, and boasts a tan basketweave for a look reminiscent of the boutique So-Cal combos of yore. Suss out how it sounds in action below – JJN definitely knows his way around a lick or two, that’s a given.
