Beastie Boys launch Adidas collaboration to celebrate 30 years of Paul’s Boutique

The collaboration was recently unveiled at the iconic Beyond The Streets store in LA, where Adidas Skateboarding’s Cullen Poythress lauded the cultural impact of the Beastie Boys, stating “Few artists showcase the confluence of so many different elements of ’80s and ’90s subculture better than Beastie Boys. They represent skateboarding. They represent graffiti. They represent hardcore punk. They represent hip-hop. And they represent street fashion and style.”

Paul’s Boutique, while initially considered a commericial flop when released 30 years ago, is now considered one of the most influential and important hip-hop albums of all time. Produced in unision with the Dust Brothers, the album was one of the first major commercial releases to heavily rely upon the use of sampling, with the Brooklyn gang sampling from over 100 tracks on the record’s 50 minute runtime.

It’s an album that turned sampling from a technological gimmick into a true musical artform, paving the way for everyone from The Avalanches and DJ. Shadow to A Tribe Called Quest and the late, great J Dilla. It’s probably one of the best hip-hop records of the ’80s, and still makes for an extremely entertaining listening experience today – it’s incredibly inspiring to hear what they managed to do with such rudimentary equipment.
