ARE SPOTIFY ABOUT TO BRING PRINCE’S CATALOGUE ONLINE?

A photograph of the display was tweeted by someone working for the company, apparently taken at the Union Square subway station in Manhattan, New York. The images show strips of the colour purple, long associated and used by the late artist throughout his career, along with Spotify’s logo.

According to Pitchfork, their sources indicate that Prince’s music is also set to appear on Apple Music and Amazon Music in the near future.

If true, this will be in direct contradiction with the singer’s wishes, who held very strong opinions about artist’s rights in regards to being financially compensation and pulled all of his music from streaming platforms in 2015. He would subsequently negotiate a deal with Tidal, for whom he curated playlists and as well as selecting his weekly ‘Purple Pick’ of new music, up until his death in April 2016.

Several weeks ago Billboard reported that the Grammy awards, which take place on Sunday February 12, will be hosting a Prince tribute during the show, leading many to believe that the catalogue will be made available to coincide with the event.
