SE ELECTRONICS SEBUNX1 BUNDLE

SE Electronics has established themselves in the world of microphone manufacturing offering good quality microphones that begin at an affordable price range. The newest addition to their range is the sEX1 bundle. This combines their sEX1 studio condenser microphone with their Project Studio Reflexion filter, offering a clever solution for recording in environments where noise or reflections cannot be controlled as easily as one would like.

sEX1 MICROPHONE

The sEX1 is a large diaphragm, studio quality condenser microphone with a fixed cardioid polar pattern. It features a switchable 10dB pad as well as a switchable high pass filter to remove unwanted low end rumble. SE claims a 20Hz – 20KHz frequency response with a maximum SPL or 125dB, so it offers the user a wide range of applications. As far as build quality goes, this microphone feels the business. It is solid, the switches are smooth but firm and the black rubber paint finish seems tough enough to handle the gruelling punishment of sitting in a studio all day.

The sEX1 offers a nice flat response, with a slight increase in presence in the top end, something that is very welcome when being used in conjunction with the Reflexion Filter. Smooth mid frequencies are abundant and the low end is even with no unruly humps as many cheaper microphones tend to suffer from.

PROJECT STUDIO REFLEXION FILTER

The Reflection Filter is an idea that has been surfacing from a number of manufacturers over past years and the SE model certainly stand up with the competitors. It is, however, somewhat smaller than other models around, making it ideal for the home studio where space is often limited. The RF is designed to work in two ways. Given that the accompanying microphone has a cardioid polar pattern, it is still susceptible to off axis noise and side spill. The RF reduces unwanted noise from entering the area immediately behind and to the sides of the microphone, which is a blessing for anyone with a not entirely quiet home studio. More importantly, the Reflexion Filter, as its name would suggest, filters out unwanted reflections from the room. Additionally, it reduces the amount of higher harmonics in the singer’s voice that make it into the space of the room which often cause issues with recording a quality vocal.

THE TWO TOGETHER

As an all in one bundle, this is a great idea. It gets the user ready to record quality vocals with the addition of a microphone stand right away. This makes it a great solution for the home or project studio, but it may be outside of the budget of many home studios. What was a shame was the lack of a suspension mount included in the bundle, but this does keep the price down and still allows the package to be a very workable solution indeed.
