10 ARTISTS TO CATCH LIVE THIS WEEK(END)

Ferla Main.jpg

Ferla

Indie Pop

You could say Ferla’s the next big thing, but in our eyes he’s already a star. That sounds patronising doesn’t it? But we’ve been hooked on the Melbourne songwriter’s weirdo new wave numbers ever since his Guilt Pop EP dropped in mid-2015. His latest, ‘I Can’t Let You Down’, is a stone cold hit. A fuckin’ banger. A patty made entirely of beetroot.

Thursday January 12 – The Old Bar – Melbourne, VIC

I Heart Hiroshima

Pop Rock

You’d almost forgotten the name I Heart Hiroshima, hadn’t you? Or perhaps not forgotten but let it slip out of your consciousness in the seven years since their last LP, The Rip. This time did nothing to diminish the band, as they showed in December with the four track EP, Spillin the Light. It’s rammed with power pop hooks and emotive vocal performances.

Thursday January 12 – Oxford Art Factory – Sydney, NSW

Truly Holy

Rock/Post Punk

‘One Thousand Years’, the latest release from Melbourne’s Truly Holy, is a brooding, muggy post-punk number, reflecting its conception in the winter of 2016. Winter 2016 contained a double dissolution election that led to the reinstatement of an even shakier LNP government, with more power going to far right factions, and the appointment of all sorts of ghastly folks to the senate. The song speaks of arriving here at this point in history and awaiting someone’s arrival. But the promised someone doesn’t show up, a feeling liberals all over the world are experiencing at present.

Rinse

Shoegaze

It’s been a while since Rinse released any music – it’s been a while since the Brissie shoegazers did much of anything, really. But they’re bringing their hazy, faithful shoegaze numbers and cache of classic art rock covers to the Foundry this Friday night.

Friday January 13 – The Foundry – Brisbane, QLD

Horace Bones

Horror Punk

There’s plenty to like about Horace Bones’ Son Of the City EP. It’s dark, noisy and toying with insanity. It’s also a lot like the early era of The Horrors. I remember hearing a CD in my mate’s car in ’07. “Is this the Birthday Party?” No. “Unreleased Joy Division?” No. “A psycho new Interpol album?” No. It was The Horrors’ Strange House. Those same questions could apply to Son Of the City.

Friday January 13  – Cherry Bar/Jenni Bar – Melbourne, VIC

Donny Benet

Disco

Donny Benet’s got his show band together to launch his latest 12” Working Out. Mark my words, a Donny Benet show is a very good date night. This is pure body music. Sensuality drips from each bass pluck and hot disco beat. Careful though, several men and women have fallen madly in love with the bandleader during one of his shows.

Saturday January 14 – Newtown Social Club – Sydney, NSW

Leah Miche and the Regular Hunters

Indie Folk

It can be unbearably hot in Perth at this time of year. Accordingly, Leah Miche and the Regular Hunters make a simmering kind of indie folk music. It doesn’t pulsate and assert its presence so much as it responds to the surroundings and provides a soothing complement.

Saturday January 14 – Mojos – Perth, WA

Dear Plastic

Art Pop/Trip Hop

Dear Plastic continue to go from strength to strength. The Melbourne band’s latest release, ‘Zero’, is one of their more wholeheartedly electronic numbers. It could’ve slotted in nicely on Massive Attack’s Heligoland LP.

Saturday January 14 – Northcote Social Club – Melbourne, VIC

Lewis Rice O’Donnell

Freak Folk

Freak folk jammer Lew O’Donnell has no time for perfection. His recordings are lo-fi in the truest sense. They don’t affect a shabby sonic quality simply to fit in with a certain sub-culture. The bloke just needs to get these songs down to tape pronto, whatever it takes.
